Presented is a fabulous 18K gold enameled pocket watch. The whole piece is decorated with a wonderful curled feathered swirl pattern engraved into the gold. Both the front and back are enameled with blue and pink flowers and translucent emerald green enameled leaves. The back is decorated with an enameled scene of a young girl chasing a butterfly with a butterfly net. The pocket watch opens in the front and back, and shows a rich, yellow gold dial face marked with the retailer’s name, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. The dial face is not original to the watch, but it is about as old as the pocket watch. The quartz movement is also not original to the pocket watch or dial face, but it is working perfectly. The look and quality of an antique pocket watch with the convenience of a quartz movement! The dial face and pocket watch case were made between 1840-1880. To set the time on the watch: This watch has a front cover and a rear cover. Both are hinged. If you open both covers it is easy to push the movement out the front of the watch as shown in the photographs. Just pull back the stem at the 12 o’clock position and you can set the time. This is a quartz watch so it does not need to be wound. It is keeping excellent time so it would probably only need to be set only once every 2 or 3 years. The pocket watch is marked on the inside rim of the back with the French 18K gold eagle head hallmark used between 1838-1919. This watch was made between 1840 and 1875. We have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be 18K gold. The condition is excellent. The gold and enamel are in fabulous shape, with very very mild surface wear to the enamel here and there. The enamel’s design and colors are still crisp and beautiful, with no losses that go all the way through to the bottom. There are no breaks, no cracks, no splits, no dents, no chips and no repairs. The pocket watch measures about 2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The total weight is 33.8 grams, including the movement. The quartz movement has been centered into the watch case with a carved piece of wood, w
hich is lightweight. About 30 grams of the piece is gold weight.
