Giant Leopard Moth
I was watering my plants in the front yard and began cleaning the porch. I was deep in thought and trying to get this chore done quickly. I am picturing a voice from above desperately trying to get my attention to look up and SEE! As usual, it probably took a lot of that quiet yelling before I finally stopped and just took a moment . . . and then I saw it. This stunning piece of natural artwork was sitting there on the brick wall very still, just waiting for me to notice. When I did, I am pretty sure I let out a tiny gasp of delight. After a brief moment to observe the lovely black and white pattern on this 2 moth, I ran into the house to grab my camera. He was resting up by my front porch light so I had to get a stool and try to balance very carefully between the stool and my porch bench to get as close as possible and at just the right angle. Isn’t he a beauty? If you look very carefully there are tiny flecks of iridescent blue on some of the black spots on the ‘head.’This moth is a member of the Erebidae, and the subfamily: Arctiinae.A Giant leopard moth
is easy to recognized by the white wings with hollow bluish black spots on the forewings and black shading along inner margins and terminal spots near apex of the hindwings. The wings tend to become translucent toward outer margins with wear so I am guessing this to be a fairly young one. It is called a giant because it is around two inches long with a wing span of 2 1/4 to 3 1/2.I am constantly amazed at the care taken in the creation of each creature on this Earth and the love with which they are decorated and made unique. I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND…..because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance! Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
